ADHD: Truly a deficit?

After Familias Leonas TDAH‘s last meeting in Mar del Plata and the repercusion of my blog post about my diagnosis, I’ve been talking to quite a few families about it; specially mothers and grandmothers of ADHD kids, but also other people who don’t have the disorder and wanted to know and understand a little bit more about it.

And there was a particular topic that I would like to address, and it has to do with the concept of DEFICIT within the ADHD label; stemming primarily from the name: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Andres Guazzelli To Release Charity Album “Atypical”

Argentinian composer and progressive rock / symphonic soundscape artist Andres Guazzelli will release his first album on October 31st 2020, the last day of National ADHD Awareness Month.

Atypical is a 20-minute musical journey of a man who has come to terms with the battle of ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) A chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. ADHD often begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It may contribute to low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and difficulty at school or work. Symptoms include limited attention and hyperactivity. Treatments include medication and talk therapy.

Living With ADHD

They say the first step to heal is to be able to say things out loud.

Some may know or remember, some may have no idea. I was diagnosed with ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, in 1996, when I was 12 years old. ADHD is a chronic disorder of the neurodevelopmental type. In simple terms, it is a deficit in the regulatory action of several neurotransmitters within the brain cortex (mainly dopamine and norepinephrine and to a lesser extent, serotonin), and usually lasts a lifetime.
